Bunuru/Djeran Celebration

All currently registered NLC families and people who are curious about the Natural Learning Centre are welcome to attend our end of term Bunuru/Djeran Celebration which will directly follow on from our Annual General Meeting.

Activities will include the opportunity for brick making for our new collaborative garden project and screen printing a NLC t-shirt (please bring a plain coloured tee along with you)…painting and planting out a pot for our upcoming plant stall and various invitations to play… along with an interest walk through our Rosa Brook forest and a chance to chat and catch up with friends before the holiday break.

Please bring morning tea and drinks for your family, gloves and a spare change of clothing as play invariably will get lovely and messy!

Welcome / Wanju to our 5th NLC News

Visual Diary

Please find a Visual Diary with images and information relating to Weeks 4 and 5 out at Rosa Brook attached. Feedback is being sought as to whether you would like to see the Visual Diary continued into our Djeran term and beyond? We are currently exploring the possibility of posting the Visual Diary (or something similar) to our Website…on a password protected Members page (for NLC families use only). The NLC Family Guide, NLC News and our NLC Policies would also sit within the Members area. The password for Members is currently NLC2019 and will change each term in line with changing registrations.

We hope you enjoy the combined Week 4/ 5 Visual Diary : )

We are seeking/continuing to seek the following items...

Thanks so much to those who have so kindly donated items over recent weeks - they have been much appreciated and will be put to good use - if they haven’t been already!

  • Cotton tee shirts of any size - white or plain colours

  • Sheets or fabric - plain or patterned

  • Ice cream containers

  • Small metal jugs and interesting kitchen items (for sandpit/mud kitchen play)

  • Cotton/natural fabric table cloths

  • Nuts/bolts/washers - interesting bits and pieces that are no longer useful for you - and that we can use creatively

Coastal Wellness Free Family Morning - Friday 22nd March - 10am to 12pm at Cowaramup Bay Beach

All families across all groups are welcome. This is a NLC day only (not an Open Day) on this occasion and will be repeated each term as our adopted beach to maintain, explore and track changes through the seasons. With easy access to rock pools, Cowaramup Creek, relatively calm, safe waters, fun rock climbing and easy car park and toilet facilities Cowaramup Bay main beach is a great option for a regular celebration of all things coastal : )

The day will include a beach clean up, points of interest walk, some weaving, free play & a simple, natural treasure hunt.

Staff are volunteering time and as such are not responsible for supervision of any children (outside of their own!). All children in attendance need to be supervised by their parent/carer at all times…and hopefully the parents will join in the fun themselves!

Beach Clean Up: The older children in our NLC groups will be sorting and classifying the rubbish we collect on the day the following week (Week 7) and will report our findings back to Tangaroa Blue (FYI Record Sheet Attached). Thanks to Loz and also Emma (Pups) for their help in organising rubbish bags, vests, and some gloves (please bring your own gloves if possible for both yourself and your child/children). If any older children (in Cass and Loz’s groups) are interested in playing a leadership role in our beach clean up please let me know and we’ll make sure they are ‘custodian’ of one of our rubbish bags…to ensure everything goes in…and nothing flies out again…and that they are briefed prior as to how to help keep everyone safe : )

It’s very important that parents carefully supervise their own children while collecting rubbish to ensure they are safe at all times. It is likely that most of the rubbish we find will be small and children need to understand that if they are unsure if something is safe to pick up to always refer to an adult e.g. glass. Thanks so much in this regard…we know it’s common sense but still need to note : )

We’ll aim to have our beach clean up first thing (10am to 10.15am) followed by unstructured play and interest walk…and then the treasure hunt at 11.30am before finishing up…people heading off at their own leisure.

Please bring:

  • Food and drinks for your family

  • Sunscreen, hats

  • Appropriate clothing for the beach

  • Gloves to help with beach clean up (as mentioned prior)

  • Towels and anything else that will help keep your family safe and comfortable for the morning

Please note that you attend the free Coastal Wellness days at your own risk and you are responsible for risk assessing for yourself and those in your care on the day. Please do not undertake any activity you feel concerned about and as/if necessary alert NLC staff about your concerns so that it can be addressed as necessary. General risks associated with the site are potential for large waves and deep water, slippery rocks, high rock formations, (currently) dry creek bed that runs up and under the road, rubbish/debris, potential stings/bites/cuts, marine creatures….the usual things you might find at an interesting coastal site that is wonderful to explore with relevant cautions in mind : ) Thank you.

We will meet under the shade shelters where some outdoor mats will be provided for your comfort, to leave bags and to create a bit of a base camp.

...And that’s it for this week.

Enjoy your weekend & we look forward to seeing you all out at Rosa Brook for your regular session/s next week... and hopefully at the additional Coastal Wellness morning also : )

Warm wishes,

Rae, Mandi and all the NLC team
